Howard Thomas Snow, Jr., (author of The Gray
Warriors) was maintaining helicopters for an oil company
in the jungles of Peru when his camp was attacked by
communist terrorists. When he came to, he'd been shot
and stabbed and was the only one alive. He managed to
sew himself up and walk to another camp 10 miles away.
It took him three days.
While recuperating he was recruited by the Department of
State to maintain aircraft for the DEA during Operation
Snowcap, Washington's attempt to curtail the production
of cocaine in Peru. The Gray Warriors is based on actual
events that occurred during that operation. It tells how
Howard (as Josh Phillips in the book) takes part in daring
rescues of missionaries, teachers, and DEA agents. How
Howard and the crew with him have their helicopter shot
out from under them and hide out in a swamp with 200

rebels and drug traffickers looking for them. How Howard is caught alone in his shop when 600
terrorists, the trained forces of the communists and drug traffickers, infiltrate his base. And how he and
90 other Americans face those terrorists in the Battle of Santa Lucia.
Although a pilot since the age of 17, Howard was first a speech & debate coach at Aurora High School
in Missouri. Then he taught Mathematics and Aviation Science at the College of the Ozarks.
His experience maintaining aircraft and teaching others how to maintain aircraft has taken him all over
the world. He worked for Cessna in Belgium, France, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and the
Philippines; for Baker Aviation above the Arctic Circle in Alaska; for the King in Saudi Arabia; and for
the United Nations in Africa.
Howard was born in San Antonio, and one of his ancestors fought at the Alamo. He grew up in
Muskogee, Oklahoma, and has Bachelor Degrees from the University of Central Oklahoma in Speech
and in Sociology and Master's Degrees in Education and in History from Drury University. He studied
aviation at Spartan College of Aeronautics and has a certificate of Airport Management, an A&P
License, an Inspection Authorization Certificate, and a Pilot Certificate.
